Bonne fête des pères Charles.
La journée commence par un drôle de cadeau pour Charles, la première chose du matin, en sortant du camping, la première crevaison du voyage, sur la roue du trailer. Cette roue a fini par avoir 3 crevaisons aujourd'hui. Et en plus, nous avons un fort vent de face toute la journée. Et 88 km est beaucoup avec ce vent et les arrêts pour crevaisons et les choix d'endroits avec camping ou motel sont peu nombreux. Alors on arrête à Chaplin où il n'y a pas d'hôtel d'ouvert et le camping n'a pas de services, pas de toilettes ni douches. Mais au moins c'était un beau site, avec beaucoup d'espace. Il y a un restaurant modeste dans ce village, avec enseigne qu'il ouvrait à 4h PM. Nous sommes allé voir vers 4:30h et il n'y avait pas de signe de vie aux alentours. Alors on s'est fait à manger au camping. Du Kraft Dinner avec du saumon en boite, c'est très bon.
Aujourd'hui le paysage était moins intéressant, excepté à la fin, en arrivant à Chaplin. On croirait voir des bancs de neige. C'est en réalité du sulfate de sodium qui est extrait par évaporation. Ceci est utilisé dans les détergents, les déodorants à tapis, des sels de bain et des colorants pour textiles.
Nous avons aussi visité le centre de la nature. Nous y avons appris que la région est reconnue pour la migration des oiseaux. (Western Hemisphere shorebird reserve). Le lac Chaplin est le 2e plus grand lac salé au Canada avec 30% plus de sel que l'eau de la mer. Alors les crevettes grises peuvent grossir et se multiplier plus qu'ailleurs et les oiseaux s'en nourrissent et refont leur énergie pour continuer leur route.

The day started with a funny gift for Charles. First thing in the morning, as we are leaving the campground, we get the first flat tire of the trip, on the trailer wheel. We ended up we three flats on that wheel today. On top of that it was a day with strong head wind, all day. We did 88 km which is a lot with that wind and the numerous stops to fix the tire. The options to stop for motel or camping are limited in this region, so we stopped in Chaplin. This is a very small town, where the motel is closed and the campground has no services, no toilet and no showers. At least if was a great site, with lots of space. They have a mediocre restaurant that is supposed to open at 4 PM. We get there at 4:30h and we can't see anybody around. So we made our supper: Kraft Dinner with a can of salmon....that was pretty good.
Today the view was less interesting, except at the end when we arrived in Chaplin. It looked like they had snow banks on the side of the road. It Sodium Sulfate that they extract by evaporation. This is used in detergents, carpet deodorants, bath salts and textile dyes.
We visited the nature centre where we learned that this area is very good for bird migration. It is the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve. The Chaplin Lake is the second largest salted lake in Canada. Its water is 30% more salted than the sea water. This makes the grey shrimps grow better and faster and the birds feed on them and they get energy to continue their travel.
