Good thing we started early again this morning (5:40h)! We knew this was a big day coming, and big it was with a climb for 35 km. A good part of it was gradual, but a very long part was very challenging. We started with cool temperature 13C, and it was 30C at the summit and 35C when we reached Castlegar. It took us a little over 5 hours to do the 35 km to the summit, but only 2 hours to ride the last 39 km, since it was all downhill.
For such a long climb day, Marthe only walked about one km, where it was not going to be much fast biking than walking! We rode over the Paulson Bridge, which reminded us of the Bixby Bridge in Big Sur, California. While we were stopped to take pictures, on the middle of the bridge, there was a big transport truck coming in the other direction. That caused vibration on the bridge. Annette, Charles' mom, would not have liked it!!
When we reached Castlegar, our first place with service since the morning, we were greeted by a McDo. That filled the empty spot! Nuggets never tasted so good! It was very warm and the hotel across the street was unavoidable. With the air conditioning on we took a small nap in the afternoon then treated ourselves to a restaurant for supper.
Yesterday we got an email from a cyclist from Warm Showers, Marty Olauson, who had stayed at our place. He suggested that tomorrow we go by Nelson and Balfour, and take the ferry to Kootenay Bay. Today we met two cyclists from Nelson and they confirmed the same thing. Thank you Marty!
