Le premier 80 km, pour me rendre à St John's était rapide et très typique du terrain rencontré à Terre-Neuve, jusqu'à présent. J'ai cependant été très surpris par le terrain sur l'extra 15 km pour me rendre au point le plus à l'est de l'Amérique du Nord; c'était très à pic, même super à-pic; mais je n'ai jamais débarqué de mon vélo! Je voulais pouvoir dire que j'avais pédalé à travers tout le Canada, et que je n'avais jamais marché.
C'était toute une émotion quand j'ai commencé à voir l'océan et Cape Spear. Je suis arrêté prendre une photo et c'est un peu gênant à dire, mais j'avais les larmes aux yeux tout le reste du chemin jusqu'au terrain de stationnement. J'étais content de ce que je venais d'accomplir, mais surtout content d'être en vie.
Après avoir fait du vélo de route sur 7790 km, avec des voitures et camions qui passent à côté de vous, parfois à seulement quelques pouces, vous êtes fier de ce que vous venez de faire, mais réalisez que bien des choses auraient pu arriver. La partie ouest de Terre-Neuve était bien intéressante à faire mais plus je roulais vers l'est, le traffic devenait plus gros et avec les 'rumble lines', parfois il n'y avait que quelques pouces où rouler.
Avec le traffic super intense de ces derniers deux jours, j'avais vraiment hâte d'arriver à la fin, mais une fois rendu au stationnement, je regardais partout pour être certain que j'étais vraiment rendu au bout. Marthe était très contente, elle aussi et je peux vous confirmer qu'elle n'a jamais eu des regrets d'être arrêté à Saint-Louis.
Nous avons installé le vélo dans la voiture et sommes allé visiter Signal Hill et le 'Mille Zéro' de Terry Fox. Malgré que c'était notre première fois à St John's, nous avons trouvé un excellent restaurant pour diner; Oliver's, sur Water Street. Avec un verre de vin et un repas qui n'aurait pas pu être meilleur, c'était une façon formidable de terminer notre aventure.
Ce soir, nous nous gâtons dans un motel de meilleur qualité et demain soir nous prenons le traversier de Argentia à North Sydney. Ce sera une traversée de 14 heures ce qui nous donnera le temps d'écrire chacun nos pensées sur notre super voyage à travers le pays.
Ce fut un été incroyable mais nous avons tout les deux hâte de retourner à la maison!!

Some people might call me stupid, others crazy, but last night I told my wife that I would not only be getting to St John's tomorrow morning, but that I would also do the extra 15 km ride to get to Cape Spear.
The 80 km ride to St John's was quick and typical of the Newfoundland terrain so far. The thing that really surprised me was the extra 15 km to get to the most easterly point in North America. It was very, very steep, but I never got off the bike. I wanted to be able to say that I had pedalled all across Canada, and that I had never walked.
It was quite the feeling when I first saw the ocean and Cape Spear. I stopped to take a picture, an I hate to say it, but I had tears in my eyes all the way to the parking lot. Glad of what I had accomplished, but mostly glad to be alive.
After 7790 km of cycling on the road and having cars and trucks go by you, sometimes inches away, you feel proud of what you have done, but realize that a lot of things could have happened. Ouest of Newfoundland was fun, but as you went East, the traffic got a lot worse. With the rumble lines, sometimes you only had inches to ride on.
With the very heavy traffic of the last two days, I couldn't wait to get to the end, but yet, when I got to the parking lot, I was looking to make sure there was nowhere else to go. Marthe was just as happy and I can guarantee that she never had any regrets of stopping in Saint-Louis.
We installed the bike in the car, then visited Signal Hill and the Terry Fox Mile Zero. We had never been in St John's before, but picked a very nice restaurant for lunch, Oliver's restaurant on Water Street. It was a very nice meal, and with a glass of wine, it was the best way to end a journey like that.
Tonight we are treating ourself to a very nice motel and tomorrow evening we will be taking the ferry from Argentia to North Sydney. It is a 14 hour ride and it will give us time to each write our thoughts on our cross-Canada journey.
It's been an incredible summer, but we are both looking forward to get home!!
