Day 75 - Aug 12 - Antigonish to Port Hastings - 48 km (T=6730 km)

Encore une fois une journée avec du vent fort de face et beaucoup de buttes, mais aujourd'hui il y avait aussi de la pluie.  Il me restait encore 190 km à faire pour me rendre au traversier pour Terre-Neuve et je savais que si je pouvais me forcer à faire 50 km ce matin, je serais près du 'causeway' et ça raccourcirait ma journée de demain.

Il ne pleuvait pas à 7h alors j'ai pris une chance.  Tout s'est bien passé sur le premier 35 km et puis la pluie a débutée.  Pour empirer les choses, j'ai monté en altitude et la brume est devenue un facteur additionnel.  J'étais content d'arriver au centre d'information touristique de Port Hastings où j'ai rencontré Marthe.

Nous avons été chanceux et avons trouvé un hôtel juste à côté.  Après un bon repos, nous avons préparé un bon diner et avons décidé de visiter la région en voiture.  Heureusement nous étions en voiture car il a mouillé fort pour une grande partie de l'après-midi.

Nous sommes allé à Iona, où nous avons visité une manufacture de chocolat, et y avons acheté de très bons chocolats.  Nous sommes revenu en passant par Little Narrows, où la rivière se traverse en utilisant un petit traversier sur cable.  Celui-ci va et vient toute la journée et ne coute que $7 par véhicule.  Il y a une église d'un côté de la rivière et c'est un très bel endroit.  Nous avons terminé la journée avec un bon repas à un restaurant chinois à Port Hawkesbury.

Ce ne fut pas une journée de vélo des plus plaisantes ce matin, mais du côté positif, ceci ne me laisse que 136 km demain et nous avons bien aimé notre après-midi, même avec toute cette pluie.

Again a day with strong head wind and lots of hills, but today also rain.  I still had 190 km left to make it to the  Newfoundland ferry and I knew that if I could squeeze about 50 km this morning, we would get to stay around the causeway and also shorten my day tomorrow.

It was not raining at 7h, so I took a chance.  Everything went well for the first 35 km, but then the rain started.  To make it worse, I got into some high grounds and the fog was also a factor.  I was glad to reach the info centre in Port Hastings, where I met up with Marthe.

We were lucky and got a motel next door.  We made lunch after a good rest and decided to visit the area with the car.  Good think we had the car, because it rained very hard most of the afternoon.

We drove to Iona, where we visited a chocolate factory and found some very good tasting chocolate.  We came back through Little Narrows and had to cross a river with a cable operated ferry.  The ferry goes back and forth, and the cost is $7 per vehicle.  There is a church by one side of the river and it is a very pretty little place.  We ended the day with a good Chinese supper at a restaurant in Port Hawkesbury.

May not have been a very pleasant bike ride this morning, but on the bright side, it only leaves me with 136 km for tomorrow and we really enjoyed the afternoon here, even though the weather was not so great.
