MANITOBA - Day 27 - June 25 - Broadview to Virden - 136 km (T=2177 km)

long distance, but easy ride!

Virden - our destination

Again, we got up early, at 4:30h, so that we could be on the road at 5:30h. We wanted to go all the way to Virden and since there was rain in the forecast for late afternoon, we wanted to get there as early as possible. Hopefully, today the wind stayed very light, so it didn't have any effect on our day.

This was going to be our last day in Saskatchewan. There is one thing for sure we are going to miss; travelling in Southern Saskatchewan and following the train tracks, we knew there was a small village every 25 km or so. That's the distance the old vapor trains needed to stop to refill with water. It was always nice to see the grain elevators in the horizon to tell us where all those villages were. And in most of those villages, you can find a Co-op, for food and gaz.

At midway, and 72 km of road, we stopped in Moosomin for a nice large breakfast that was awesome. It was only 9:30h and by then we knew we would definitely make it to Virden, where we would get to a nice Comfort Inn, for 2 nights, because we all want a rest day tomorrow.

20 km later, and 92 km of ride, we were crossing to Manitoba, our 4th province. There was not much there, so we just took pictures and went on to the next village, Elkhorn, 10 km farther, where we enjoyed cold drinks and ice cream. We were only 30 km from our rest day.

Then we ran into a dark cloud that gave us rain for 10 km or so. It stopped raining a bit before we got to the hotel, so by the time we arrived, we were all dry. We are in a nice hotel and we are definitely sleeping in tomorrow morning.

When we crossed to Manitoba, we lost an hour, as we had to advance our clocks by one hour. We now only have 2 hours difference in time with home.

Day 26 - June 24 - Indian Head to Broadview - 94 km (T=2041km)

Nous avons pris plusieurs long breaks aujourd'hui.

finally our destination

Today we were up at 4:30 a.m. because we knew it was going to be a head wind today, and since it was going to get worse, we thought we would take advantage of the calmer morning. We wanted to get to Broadview today, and early enough to get a good rest.

We took a lot of longer breaks today. After only a couple of km we stopped at the Indian Head Bakery for a very good breakfast, and then after 30 km, we stopped in Wolseley. Charles wanted to go there because he had worked with a pharmacist, Arnold McQuaid, from that town, as a pharmacy student, between 1978 -1982. Arnold had owned the pharmacy in town before retiring and working a few years in Richibucto, NB. Arnold died 4 years ago, but Charles was able to talk to a lot of people who knew him. Across the pharmacy, there was a bakery and we saw two loaded bikes outside the building. We went inside and met a young couple, Amy and Matt, cycling from Winnipeg to Kelowna, for their honeymoon. And then, down the street, we went to see the swinging bridge, a local tourist attraction.

At 53 km, we took a picture...this is where we had reached 2000 km since we left Stanley Park. We were at 8 km from Grenfell, where we stopped again, and had a good meal and a very needed rest. From there we had 25 km left to ride to get to Broadview. First we went to the campground, that had no showers, so then we checked the first hotel, which we did not like (smoke smell), and settled for the last hotel, which is just ok. We had no other options. With the head wind, we did not want to go any further even though it was only 13:30h. The next village would be 25 km away, and may not have anything better!

There is again a chinese restaurant in town, (the only restaurant), so we will be eating chinese food for two consecutive nights.

We learned something new today. Vegetarian is an old Indian word. It means 'lousy hunter'. It's amazing what you can learn reading people's t-shirts!

Day 25 - June 23 - Moose Jaw to Indian Head - 144 km (T=1947 km)

Today again we had a breakfast included with the hotel, starting at 6h AM. We were then ready to leave at 6:30h, with a tail wind, that stayed with us about 75% of the time.  After 75 km we were on the East side of Regina and stopped at Dennys restaurant for breakfast. This was an excellent breakfast. We were sitting next to a table with many people a little older than us. They noticed us getting in due to our bright colors. They also noticed the Acadian flag on Charles' Maya trailer. This started a conversation between the two tables. They were very captivated by our travel adventure. One of them, Don came to sit with us and gave us good advice for the route to take in the next few days. Then he told us that he would be taking care of our breakfast tab. Thank you Don.

When we finished our meal we realized that we had just lost our tail wind and there is a long ascent to make it to Indian Head. We were glad that this changed again to tail wind after another 30 km. This last 70 km took longer to ride and we also had a temperature climbing to 34C. Hopefully the wind was keeping us a bit cool. In Indian Head they have two small hotels, but we could not get a room, so we are camping and the weather is great. This is a super nice campground. We decided to spoil ourselves with a nice supper at the chinese restaurant in town. Today, Farha is not with us since she stayed later to her contact in Moose Jaw before leaving for Regina. We will probably meet her again in a few days, since we are planning to do a few short days.

Day 24 - June 22 - Chaplin to Moose Jaw - 85 km (T=1803 km)

 the yellow bananas...and the orange!!!

Farha said if she was alone and had a flat tire, she would get the tent out

Main street - Moose Jaw

We only got up at 6h AM this morning because the gas station with a washroom, next to the campground was only opening at 7h. We packed everything and were at the gas station by 6:45h and we were glad to see the employee arrived 15 minutes early. We bought some snacks and took off because we knew there was a restaurant 41 km away. Around 5 km before our breakfast destination, Kevin took his turn and had a flat tire. Once fixed, we headed for a wonderful breakfast.

After, we knew we only had another 45 km to get to Moose Jaw. There we knew we were getting a hotel and restaurant and grocery store. After a nice shower, we headed to the bike shop in town where we got some extra tubes and a new patch kit. We ended the day with a nice meal in a restaurant.

Farha was not very visible on the road with her blue sweater. We found her a yellow vest.  At a stop on the side of the road, Charles commented that she is now part of the yellow bananas club. But Charles did not realized he was wearing his orange coat, so Marthe said that he must be the orange of the group.

At breakfast, Farha ordered a milk shake...that gave her wings.....we all want a milk shake tomorrow!!
