MICHIGAN - Day 40 - July 8 - Iron River to Wakefield - 130 km (T=3351 km)

Wakefield

Leaving at 6h AM, our first stop in Ashland after 41 km, we were not very hungry, since we had breakfast in the room with homemade bread we received from Molly when we left Duluth.  So we just got a McMuffin at McDo, to make us last until lunch.  Our lunch was in Ironwood, after 106 km. It was 13:00h and we were hungry.  Just before getting there, at 105 km, we changed state to Michigan.

We had a very good meal and leaving town, there was a construction zone and at 113 km, Charles got another flat tire on the trailer, due to a staple again.  It took us a few stops to get a hotel.  The first one did not want bikes in the room and the proprio was not nice at all, the second was closed and the third was not much and too expensive for what it is, but it is 4h PM and the next hotel is located 16 miles (26 km) away.  So we took it, and they don't have Wi-Fi.  We are using the personal hotspot from the cellular phone for the blog so we will only add the photos another day.

Wisconsin - Day 39 - July 7 - Duluth to Iron River - 80 km (T=3221 km)

Iron River - Where everybody knows you by name

We started the day by walking to the water falls again, then later taking a small hike with Molly and Rich to see some trails near their home. Duluth has 70 km of cross country ski trails in the winter and many bike trails in the summer.  From Duluth, to go east, you go toward the town of Superior in the state of Wisconsin.  There are two bridges to  get there, but only one allows bicycles and it is closed for construction.  (you can also do a long detour around town). So we needed to be taxied out of town and Rich had said he would do it.

When their friend, that we met at the camp, Lane and Nancy, found out about the new addition in the family, they offered to host us if we wanted to take a day off in Duluth and they would bring us across the bridge.  Since the weather was good, we declined the first offer but accepted the lift across the bridge. This was really nice of them. Thank you Lane for helping us.

We had originally planned to go to Ashland, about 120 km away, but with a later start (10h) and the warm weather, we decided to stop in Iron River, after 80 km and around 3h PM.

Day 38 - July 6 - Floodwood to Duluth - 80 km (T=3141 km)

We got up at 6h this morning and we knew that we had a short 80 km ride planned for the day.  Looking at the weather network, we realized that Duluth was getting heavy rain until 13:00h.  It was not raining in Floodwood, but decided to wait until 9:30h to leave, so we would get less rain at the end of our route.  By the time we left, it was raining and it rained for the first 65 km .  At least not too heavy most of the time, and the temperature was warm.

We stopped at 22 km at a bar for a break and at 42 km at a little dinner where we ate lunch.  Molly and Rich, who were coming back from the camp, stopped there to talk to us.  They offered us a ride home, but we said it would be cheating.

The rain stopped 15 km from our destination and Rich met us, by bike, about 10 km from his house.  He had a long climb all that way, since we got a nice downhill to his house.  We were glad that the rain had stopped by then because the last part was on the seven-bridges road.  A beautiful ride in a park, crossing a lot of nice brick bridges and finishing with a water fall, 150 meters from their gorgeous house.  Molly welcomed us with cold Pepsi and crackers and cheese.

Then they got a phone call letting them know that they were the proud grand-parents of a new baby girl, Isabelle Catherine, bored July 6th, the same day as Marthe. This is their third grand-child.

Then we went out for supper in a very nice restaurant overlooking Lake Superior, the largest by surface, fresh water lake in the world. After supper, they took us for a tour of Duluth, which is a very pretty town.  We visited the harbour, saw the rising bridge and finished the evening with a nice ice cream.

So, Rich and Molly, again thank you for the route selection for today, as well as the very nice evening.  Wish you a great trip tomorrow, to see that new grand-daughter.  We will never forget that Minnesota experience.  Thank you, thank you and thank you!

Just to say that a day that did not start looking so good, ended up not being so bad and finished a superb way.  Thank you also for all the birthday wishes.

Day 37 - July 5 - Marcell to Floodwood - 120 km (T= 3061 km)

Grand Rapids is a big town
 3000 km celebration
we are happy - nous sommes content!

Definition of a perfect rest day:
1 - very quiet place away from traffic and train tracks
2 - nice company
3 - lots to eat including homemade chocolate chips cookies and homemade bread
4 - a nice lake and a boat

Well, the problem is leaving the next day. You know you have lots of riding left and you have to take advantage of the nice temperature.  The advantage, is that we know, that once in Duluth, we get to be hosted by the same great couple.

Tomorrow is Marthe's birthday and we plan a nice meal in a restaurant with Rich and Molly, to thank them for all the nice things they have done for us.

Today, we have to say a big thank you for the advice on the route they got us to take.  We started on route 48, and like they have said, there was no shoulder, but the traffic would be very low.  We saw a total of 2 cars on that first 25 km. The rest of the way, we had great shoulders, and we made it to Floodwood, where they had said we would find a motel.  A perfect day, except for a not so great wind!

One more thing that we have to mention for today, is that after 59 km, we reached a total of 3000 km for the trip.  We were in Grand Rapids, and we celebrated with 2 nice apple turnovers.  We are very happy with that total, because we know that we have reached the half-way point.
