Day 36 - July 4 - Independence Day - Rest Day - Marcell

Charles à débuté sa journée tôt (5:30h) en prenant une promenade en voiture avec Rich, pour chercher pour des animaux. Ils n'ont pas vu d'oiseaux, mais plusieurs chevreuils.  Le passe-temps de Rich est la photographie et il s'y applique énormément.  Rich est ensuite sorti en kayak et a prit 112 photos d'oiseaux.

Nous avons pris deux petites marches et aussi une petite tournée en bateau pour aller nager dans le lac. Lane et Nancy, un couple , amis de Molly et Rich, sont arrivés au chalet vers le midi. C'est deux personnes très actives et intéressantes. Un autre super souper et du vin ont très bien terminé la journée.

Encore une fois nous utilisons le personal hotspot du cellulaire pour poster le blog, donc les photos seront ajoutées dans un ou deux jours, lorsque nous auront Wi-Fi.

Nancy and Lane

Charles started the day early (5:30h) by going on a car ride with Rich, looking for wildlife. They did not see any birds, but quite a few deers.  Rich hobby is photography and he spends a lot of time at it.  Rich then went kayaking on the lake and took 112 pictures of birds. 

We took two small hikes and we also took a small boat ride to go swimming in the lake.  Lane and Nancy, a couple, friends of Molly and Rich, came to the camp around lunch time. They are also a very nice couple and very active and interesting. Another excellent supper with some wine, gave us a nice end to a great day. 

We are using personal hotspot from the cellular phone to post the blog as there is no Wi-Fi here, so we will add the photos in a few days, when we get it. 

Day 35 - July 3 - Shooks to Marcell - 92 km (T=2941 km)

Nous avons pris un très léger déjeuner au motel ce matin, puis après avoir roulé 12 km, nous sommes arrivés à Northome. Nous avons vu une enseigne à l'extérieur d'un centre d'age d'or qui disait qu'ils ont un déjeuner aux crêpes à partir de 7h. Il était 6:50h mais nous avons pu entrer tout de suite. Tout le monde était intéressé par notre aventure. Ils ont même pris une photo de nous. C'était les hommes qui cuisinaient et le repas était parfait.

Nous avons eu des petites 'rolling hills' toute la journée. Environ 5 km avant Marcell, nous avons vu deux cyclistes qui venaient dans notre direction. Nous ne pensions pas que ce serait nos amis, Molly et Rich, parce qu'on devait les rencontrer à Marcell. Nous les avons rencontrés juste à temps pour déguster une crème glacée ensemble 2 km plus loin.  Nous restons à leur cabine (camp) pour 2 soirs.

Quelle belle journée. Nous avons commencé avec un déli et plein de nourriture pour le diner. Puis nous avons fait une grande tournée en bateau sur le lac. Nous avons vu plein de belles résidences et des 'resorts'.  Plus tard nous avons eu un autre superbe repas - shish kabobs -, avec salade césar, salade de fruits et riz. Encore beaucoup de nourriture. Après avoir resté à un motel sans services autour, pas de restaurants et magasins, ceci était parfait.

Nous avons aussi rencontré leur plus jeune fils, Erik et sa fiancée, Katie, qui vont se marier l'an prochain, le 15 août...journée des Acadiens. Ce sera facile de se souvenir de cette date. C'est un beau jeune couple, très gentils, qui ont bien des choses en commun. Nous leur souhaitons une belle vie ensemble et une belle famille avec plusieurs enfants.

Encore ce soir, nous utilisons le Personal Hotspot du cellulaire pour faire le blog, dons les photos seront ajoutés dans quelques jours quand nous aurons du Wi-Fi.

We had a very small breakfast at the motel this morning, and after 12 km of riding we were in Northome. We saw a sign by a senior citizen center  saying that they were having a pancake breakfast starting at 7h AM. It was 6:50h, but were able to get in right away. Everybody was excited by our adventure. They even took a picture of us. It was the men cooking and the meal was perfect. 

We had small rolling hills all day. About 5 km before Marcell, we saw 2 cyclists coming by us. We were not thinking that it could have been our friends, Molly and Rich, because we were supposed to meet them in Marcell.  We met them just in time to go for an ice cream 2 km later.  We are staying at their camp for 2 nights. 

What a day it has been. They started out with a nice deli lunch with lots to eat.  Then we went for a long boat ride on the lake and saw lots of resorts and nice places.  Later on, we got a very nice supper.     We had shish-kabobs, with a cesar salad, a fruit salad and rice.  Lots and lots to eat. After staying in a motel with no services around last night, this was just a perfect night.

We also got to meet their youngest son, Erik and his fiance, Kathie, whom are getting married next year on August 15th...Acadian Day.  It will be hard to forget this date.  They are a very nice young couple, who have a lot in common.  We wish them a very nice life with lots of kids. 

Day 34 - July 2 - Baudette to Shooks - 101 km (T=2849 km)

Aujourd'hui nous savions que nous avions 100 km de route avec presque aucun endroit pour arrêter pour des services. Sur le premier 65 km, il y avait du bois de chaque côté du chemin et aussi un canal plein d'eau de chaque côté. L'accotement était limité, mais aussi le traffic.

À 65 km, Charles à dit à Marthe: ' J'arrête prendre une photo de l'enseigne.' Ça disait: 'Waskish'.  Nous avions vu ce nom sur la carte hier, mais ne pensions pas qu'il y aurait grand chose là.  À 67 km, nous avons eu la surprise de trouver Westwood Resort. Un endroit qui est super beau et où nous avons eu un excellent déjeuner et pris un arrêt de 45 - 60 minutes.

À partir de ce point, jusqu'à notre destination, il n'y avait plus de 'rumble lines', et donc un accotement raisonnable. Nous sommes arrivés au très petit 'Royal Shooks Motel' vers 13:00h. Il n'y a pas de Wi-Fi et aucun magasin dans le coin. Il y a un four micro-ondes, alors nous allons utiliser le manger qu'on transporte depuis un certain temps.

Nous avons hâte à demain. Pour le dernier 34 jours, nous avons couché dans des motels ou camping, mais demain nous rencontrons Molly et Rich et allons rester à leur chalet.

Comme il n'y a pas d'internet, nous avons utilisé celui du cellulaire (personal hot spot) pour faire le blog, alors nous allons seulement ajouter les photos lorsqu'on aura du Wi-Fi.

Today we knew we would be riding 100 km with not much stops for services. For the first 65 km, there was wood on both sides and both ditches full of water. The shoulder was limited but there was not much traffic. 

At 65 km, Charles said to Marthe: ' I'm stopping here to take a picture of the sign.' It only said: 'Waskish'. We saw that name on the map but did not think there would be much there. At 67 km, to our surprise, we found Westwood Resort. Super nice looking place, where we had an awesome breakfast and took a 45 - 60 minutes break. 

From there to our destination, there was no more rumble lines, which gave us a nice shoulder.  We arrived at the very small 'Royal Shooks Motel' at 13:00h. There is no Wi-Fi and no store all around us. We have a micro-wave oven, so are cooking some of the supplies we have been carrying. 

We are looking forward to tomorrow. For the last 34 days, we have been staying in hotels or campgrounds, but tomorrow we meet Molly and Rich, and will be staying at their cottage. 

Since we don't have any internet, we are using the one from the cellular phone (personal hot spot) to write the blog, so we will only add the picture when we have Wi-Fi. 

Minnesota, USA - Day 33 - July 1 - South Junction to Baudette - 101 km (T=2748 km)

Après 31 km, nous sommes arrivés à la frontière Canada-États-Unis, pour entrer au Minnesota; il était 7:30h AM. Donc, nous avons passé presque 1/3 du Jour du Canada, au Canada, mais n'avons pas pris part à des célébrations. Le passage à la frontière s'est déroulé sans aucun problème, ne prenant que 5 minutes et ne perdant qu'une tangerine.

Ce 31 km au Canada était si tranquille, ne voyant qu'une poignée de voitures, qu'on se demandait si le bureau des douanes serait ouvert. Le traffic a augmenté une fois rendu aux USA. Nous étions aussi plus souvent prés de la civilisation. Les propriétés étaient toutes très propres et bien entretenues. Il y avait aussi beaucoup de drapeaux Américains à voir.

10 km (6 milles) après la frontière, nous sommes arrivés à Warroad. Nous sommes entrés dans trois magasins avant de pouvoir acheter une carte routière en papier du Minnesota. Nous avons aussi pris un déjeuner rapide. En quittant le restaurant, nous avons vu une enseigne qui disant: Baudette 36. Nous étions excités en pensant que nous allions avoir une journée de 80 km au lieu du 100 km prévu. Mais nous avons vite pensé que c'était 36 milles donc encore environ 60 km.

Sur le dernier tier de notre route, il faisait plus chaud et il y avait beaucoup de taons tout autour de nous. Même en roulant environ 20 km/h, ils restaient à tourner près de nous. Comment vite que ces insectes peuvent voler? Donc, arrivé à Baudette, vers 12:30h, nous ne voulions pas aller camper, puisque nous en avions assez des taons, donc sommes à un hôtel.

After 31 km, we were at the Canada-USA border, entering Minnesota; it was 7:30h AM. So we spent almost 1/3 of Canada Day in Canada, but did not take part in any celebration. The crossing of the border went very smoothly, taking only 5 minutes and loosing only a tangerine.

This 31 km in Canada was very quiet, only seeing a handful of cars. It was so quiet that we were wondering if the border office would be closed. The traffic picked up once in the USA. We were also more often near civilization. Every property was very clean and nicely kept. And lots of American flags to be seen.

10 km (6 miles) after the border, we were in Warroad. We visited 3 stores before purchasing a paper map of Minnesota. We also stopped for a fast breakfast. When we left the restaurant, we saw a sign that said: Baudette 36. We got excited thinking we were only going to have a 80 km day instead of the planned 100 km. But we soon came to senses and realized that it was 36 miles so almost another 60 km.

In the last 1/3 of our route, the weather was warmer and we had lots of horseflies around us.  Even going about 20 km/h, they were still all around us. How fast can these insect fly?  So when wearied in Baudette, around 12:30h, we did not want to share a campsite with these horseflies, so we took a hotel.
